Canadian PM Begins Two-Day Visit to Ireland

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has started a two-day official visit to the Republic of Ireland, marking a significant diplomatic trip focused on both political relations and personal heritage.

According to reports, Carney and his wife, Diana Fox Carney, arrived at Dublin Airport at around 10:00 local time, where they were received by Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

This visit marks the first bilateral trip to Ireland by a Canadian prime minister since 2017, when Justin Trudeau made a similar visit.

Authorities noted that security measures will include temporary and localized traffic disruptions, with rolling road closures arranged to support official events and protective escorts.

During the visit, Carney is scheduled to travel between Dublin and County Mayo. On Saturday, he held a private one-on-one meeting with Martin, followed by a joint press conference at Government Buildings.

Speaking at the event, Martin said the visit offered an opportunity for Carney “to celebrate and explore his Irish heritage”.

“I know I speak for the people of Mayo, and indeed for the Irish people more broadly, when I say that we are deeply honoured to welcome him back.”

He also emphasized the importance of the trip in strengthening ties between the two countries, describing it as an “excellent occasion to celebrate and strengthen the bilateral relationship between Ireland and Canada”.
